Using Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Fish Oil with EDS and Hypermobility

Welcome back to the Bendy Club blog! This week, we’re diving into the incredible benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly their role in reducing inflammation. For those with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), managing inflammation is key to maintaining a better quality of life. Let’s explore how Omega-3s can be a powerful ally in your health journey.

Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids Matter for EDS and Hypermobility

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that your body can’t produce on its own. They play a crucial role in brain function, as well as normal growth and development. Omega-3s are also known for their potent anti-inflammatory properties, making them particularly beneficial for individuals with HSD and EDS who often deal with chronic pain and inflammation.

Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

1. Reduces Inflammation

  • Omega-3s help reduce the production of inflammatory substances, providing relief from joint pain and swelling common in EDS and Hypermobility.

2. Improves Joint and Muscle Health

  • These fatty acids can help lubricate joints, reducing stiffness and improving overall joint function. They have also been shown to decrease the loss of muscle mass as people age.

3. Supports Heart Health

  • Omega-3s are known to lower the risk of heart disease, which is important for overall health, especially in those with connective tissue disorders.

4. Enhances Mental Health

  • Omega-3s support brain health and can help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression, often experienced by those with chronic conditions.

Action Steps to Incorporate Omega-3s into Your Diet

1. Eat Fatty Fish

  • Include fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and trout in your diet. These are rich sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.

2. Look into Fish Oil Supplements

  • Fish oil supplements are a great way to increase your omega 3 intake. Generally dosing is between 2-3g of EPA+DHA. So if you have a supplement with 500mg EPA and 500mg DHA that would equal 1000mg or 1g total fish oil. Now you need to look at the supplement and see the serving size. Is that dose in 1 or 3 capsules this will determine how many capsules you need to take to get to the desired dosing.

3. Add Flaxseeds and Chia Seeds

  • Sprinkle flaxseeds or chia seeds on your yogurt, salads, or smoothies. These seeds are excellent plant-based sources of Omega-3s.

4. Use Walnuts and Soy Products

  • Incorporate walnuts and soy products into your meals. They are also good sources of Omega-3 fatty acids.

More on Fish Oil Supplementation

There is a lot to consider when looking into supplementation of Omega 3s. The form of the fish oil supplement matters a lot. Ideally the fish oil supplement should be in the Triglyceride form as this is going to be the most bioavailable. You also want to make sure that the fish oil supplement does not contain high levels of heavy metals like mercury. There are 3rd party groups that test fish oil supplements the one that appears to do the best is the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS™). They do a great job analyzing products and testing them for purity, dosing, heavy metals, and oxidation.

One other recommendation is to keep your fish oil supplements in the fridge. Fish oil can go rancid meaning the oils can oxidize making them less beneficial and even potentially harmful. You would never leave a piece of salmon sitting out for weeks then eat it right? The same goes for fish oil. So make sure to refrigerate once you purchase.
