Why Compression Comes Up So Often with POTS
If you have POTS, you’ve probably been told to “try compression.” And then… nothing else. No explanation. No guidance. Compression isn’t magic, but when used correctly, it can be a powerful tool for symptom management. Understanding why it helps makes it much easier to use consistently.
What Compression Actually Does
In POTS, blood tends to pool in the lower body when you’re upright. Compression garments apply external pressure that helps push blood back toward the heart and brain. This can reduce dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, and that “about to black out” feeling. It doesn’t fix the condition, but it can improve daily function.

Not All Compression Is Created Equal
Compression socks alone often aren’t enough. The most effective compression targets the abdomen and thighs, not just the calves. Blood pooling doesn’t stop at the knees. Waist-high compression tights, abdominal binders, or bike-short–style compression garments can be even more helpful for POTS symptoms.
How Much Compression Do You Need?
Mild compression may feel comfortable but not be effective enough to help significantly decrease symptoms. For POTS, 15–30 mmHg is usually the minimum effective range, and some people may benefit from higher amounts of compression. But you should build up gradually and the tighter the clothes the harder they are to get on and off. It is super important to be careful when putting on compression clothes and not injure your hands, shoulders, wrists when pulling to get them on and off.
When (and How) to Wear Compression
Compression works best when worn before symptoms start. Put garments on in the morning. You may not need them all day long, but when you have to go do activity that could trigger your symptoms. Wearing compression during activities that involve standing, walking, heat exposure, or long outings can make a noticeable difference.
Common Mistakes That Make Compression Fail
Wearing garments that are too loose, or putting them on after symptoms are already severe are common pitfalls. Trouble getting them on, discomfort when wearing, overheating, or sensory issues can also make adherence hard. If it’s miserable, it won’t be sustainable — adjustments matter. Compression is not for everyone but it is worth trying because it could make a significant difference.
Compression Is One Tool, Not the Whole Plan
Compression works best alongside hydration, adequate sodium intake, physical conditioning, and pacing. It’s a support — not a replacement — for other strategies. If compression doesn’t help at all, that doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. Bodies respond differently.
